Project Overview

Our class, INTEG 452B is the second half of a 4th year capstone design course. 12 students mostly from Knowledge Integration are designing modular housing for the Working Centre with the intention of it being used for people whoa have a difficult time retaining housing of their own.

This class started out the term split up into the working groups laid out at the end of last term. Those groups were Bylaws working group, the building/construction working group, the people oriented group, and the community spaces group. These groups were created last term mostly as a way to organize our research effort to understand some things about the task of designing modular housing. We started out with design briefs and an action plan for each group thatwould give us directionto start our project of designing modular housing in shipping containers for the Working Centre. At the end of January, each of the working groups gave a presentation that summed up all of their findings and put forward some questions that they had come to.

After these presentations it was clear that we had to start working in a different direction from what we had planned for from last term. After significant class discussion about what we had learned and how we want to progress we decided to break into three entirely new groups: the TWiki group, the interior group, and the exterior group. This direction in effect was to focus almost entirely on the design of the shipping container house and the method to give our research over to the Working Centre. The interior group would be focused on the interior design, some utilities, furniture and other similar things. The exterior group would focus on the exterior of the shipping container. The TWiki group is tasked with managing the TWiki so that the working centre can not only get our conclusions, but also have access to all our past work and rationale while not being overwhelmed by a 100 page document.

From research into bylaws and the intentions of the town, the class also decided to form Public Comment Draft group, a "secondary" group that will work toward submitting a public comment in regards to the towns plan to not look at garden suites. The work would involve finding research and justifying why the town should allow for garden suites.
